Comparing Rec and Travel Soccer at CSC

You may have asked yourself, “What is the difference between Travel and Recreational Soccer?” Cardinal Soccer Club offers both programs each of which allows youth the opportunity to play and develop their soccer skills at an appropriate level and pace. Below are some details about both programs, including a side by side comparison.

Differences between Rec and Travel Soccer

Recreational soccer is primarily devoted to the enjoyment and development of soccer players without the same emphasis on high-level competition. The purpose of recreational soccer is to provide an opportunity for the participants to have fun, learn the sport and develop life skills including a life-long love of the game. Coaches are almost always novice, and usually are parent volunteers who offer to coach their children and their friends.

Travel Soccer is devoted to player and team development in a more competitive environment. All players are welcome to attend try-outs, but not all will be asked to join a team. Coaches are licensed and bring a wealth of personal playing and training experience to the teams they lead. Travel is competitive and players' development is important. Families and players should recognize that a greater commitment, both in terms of attendance at practices and at games is required.

Differences between Travel and Premier Soccer

There is another level above Travel soccer which CSC does not offer, which is Premier. Premier soccer is played by very athletic and very skilled players. Premier Clubs typical play on Saturdays where Travel plays on Sundays, so some players participate in both Travel and Premier leagues. Premier soccer clubs often charge as much as 3-times as much as our Travel program with many charging extra for tournament participation. Some premier Clubs include uniforms in their fees, while others can charge as much as our Yearly Travel fees for uniforms alone. They will play other Premier Teams in the region and may sometimes go out of state for tournaments. This option is best for players looking for the highest level of competition.

Who should play Travel soccer?

As players become more skilled, desire a more competitive soccer environment, and become willing to commit greater time to training, the Travel program exists for them as a higher-level athletic experience. The word “Travel” really means “Advanced” or “Competitive”. Almost all Travel games are within 60-minute drive or less of Mentor, OH time.
